Youth Igniting Change Summer Institute – Amplify Your Voice!

Posted on May 2017

Join us June 12th-16th for our 3rd annual Youth Igniting Change Summer Institute! This year our theme is Amplify Your Voice where youth will focus on the power of knowing and expressing participant’s individual and collective voice. If you know a teen looking to better understand themselves, others, and their community, we hope they will participate in this fun, engaging, and challenging youth leadership camp.

Trained youth workers from the Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services and the Office on Children and Youth will work with participants to raise their voices about issues they care about. Throughout the week, students will also work with local artists and a variety of different mediums to creatively express themselves. Alongside the artists, students will craft messages and art to support a cause and/or an event they care about. Through this process, participants will learn organizing, communication, planning, and leadership skills. On Wednesday, students will take a field trip to see examples of how others have expressed their voice. The camp will culminate with a presentation open to family, friends, and the community of all participants.

The camp, held at JMU’s Ice House (127 W. Bruce St.) will run from 9am-2:00pm Monday- Thursday, and will end Friday at 12:00pm with a presentation.

Youth Igniting Change is FREE for participants and open to rising 9th-12th graders. Transportation can be provided for participants if needed and lunch is provided each day.
